Cyclists face many challenges every day including crowds, traffic lights, and speed differences with other road users causing dangerous situations with cars and trucks. The cyclist, in general, is vulnerable and in particular, the demographic of older cyclists and e-bike riders has an even higher occurrence of these problems.

According to the German insurers’ accident research association, approximately one-third of bicyclists are killed in traffic accidents each year due to a turning vehicle. For this reason, a huge amount of technology is going into right-turning assist systems and they are proving to be a success. 36% of all accidents in which a cyclist is killed could be prevented by installing a right-turn assist system – particularly in trucks.

Bicycles and cars don’t play well together, and between a rapid increase in smart-phone driven distracted driving and the increasing number of electric and hybrid cars which make little or no noise when they approach, things on the road are getting more challenging than ever for the city cyclists.

Based on the analysis of reported cycling collision data from ICBC we identified the key cycling safety issues: 

• Doorings. Doorings occurred when bicycle users were struck by or strike a door of a parked motor vehicle, typically on the driver side. 

• Conflict Zones. Mid-block conflict zones such as driveways, parking lots, and alleyways accounted for approximately 10.7% of all reported cycling collisions. 

• Right Hooks. Collisions involving right-turning vehicles, also known as ‘right hooks’ mostly happened in the downtown core. 

BIKEAPPROACH is the active safety mobile solution for bicycles using radiolocation and passing that information to vehicle operators through GPS to prevent and mitigate the risk of the car-and-bicycle collision. In places with poor visibility of approaching cyclists, the BIKEAPPROACH system increases traffic safety by giving timely warnings of cyclists crossing the road. In addition to making the traffic situation safer, BIKEAPPROACH can be a valuable tool for better insight among road managers.
